The Special Political and Decolonization

The Special Political and Decolonization (SPECPOL) Committee is the fourth of six General Assembly committees of the UN. At first, SPECPOL was created to deal with issues related to trusteeship and non-self-governing territories. After the end of the trusteeship system SPECPOL deals with various matters of international politics. The topics that are encompassed by the SPECPOL Committee include decolonization-related agenda items, the effects of atomic radiation, the question of peacekeeping operations as well as a review of special political missions, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the Report of the Special Committee on Israeli Practices and International cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space. In addition to these annual items, the Committee also considers many items such as Assistance in mine action and University for Peace. Sharing the same procedures and the structure with the other General Assembly committees, SPECPOL does not have the authorization to make a legally binding decision.
